2008 Car Reliability Survey

Consumer Reports released the results of its 2008 Car Reliability Survey.  The winner was the Scion xD.  CR surveyed 1.4 million people who were asked to report any serious problems in 17 trouble spots that they had in the last 12 months.  CR used the data to formulate “predicted-reliability ratings” for new cars.  Hybrids scoring […]

Yesterday I was lamenting the less than thrilling body styling of the Toyota Prius, at least that’s the way I reacted to it.  Now, the Honda Civic Hybrid is a bit of a different story.  It’s a little longer and sleeker than the Prius but you won’t confuse it with a Lexus.  You will likely […]

Toyota Scion Updates

After recently writing about advantages of the Toyota Scion, I thought I’d pass along a little update I read this morning.  Dan Strumpf, Associated Press, reports that the Scion’s sales have continued to slump.  August U.S. sales were 20% below last year even though they increased 2% year to date.  But he also adds that […]

Gas by Class, Part 4

What review of gas savers minus hybrid mark-up would be complete without the 2009 Toyota Corolla.  However, this Corolla has a more appealing body style, less boxy and more flowing.  It has 5 versions including the sporty S model and the XRS upscale Toyota Corolla.  The price range is $15,000 – $19,000.  The Corollas have […]

Gas by Class, Part 3

Here’s a few more “functional” cars presented by Evan Griffy of MSN Autos.  The Toyota Scion xD will give you 27 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway  and the 1.8 liter 128 hp engine will provide good power for a signature “rolling box” that features Toyota reliability.  You know how weird looking […]

Gas by Class, Part 2

Evan Griffy of MSN Autos presented a great feature recently on gas savers and their lifestyle implications.  The Honda Fit is another car to send your kid to college with or commute around town.  It can be used to haul people and things cheaply.  It will run about $14,00 and about $1500 more for the […]

Evan Griffy of MSN Autos presented a great feature recently on gas savers and their lifestyle implications.  First up is the Toyota Yaris which is rated at 29 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway.  It’s taken the lower slot that Corolla occupied when it was bumped a little upstairs.  A great student […]

Hybrid Factoids

The Honda Civic Hybrid is rated at 40 mpg in city driving and 45 mpg on the highway for $22,500.
Toyota Prius Hybrid can be had for $22,000 - $24,000 and gets 48/45 mpg.  Notice that the city miles are slightly higher. That’s where the electric drivetrain does more work.
Ford Escape Hybrid will run in the […]

Our previous blog centered on Ford’s 2009 compact SUVs, the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner, earning 5 Star ratings from the National Highway Safety Administration and bettering the 4 Stars averaged by Toyota’s compact SUVs, the Toyota Highlander and Toytoa Prius hybrids.   David Finnegan from Ford was quoted in The Detroit News as saying,   “Safety […]

Don’t you hate those teaser headlines.  Well, I guess we can get away with a little blatant homerism seeing that the Olympic spirit is pretty high right now.  Bryce G. Hoffman reports in The Detroit News that Ford’s 2009 compact SUVs earned 5 Star ratings from the National Highway Safety Administration, better than the 4 […]
