A few weeks ago, GM took the opportunity to unveil the Chevy Volt, a plug-in electric car that is much awaited in the industry and perhaps will be the “Commodore 64” of a new wave of automotive technology. Chrysler wasted no time in previewing three new prototype electrics of its own. Two looked pretty familiar, an electric version of the Chrysler Town and Country minivan and a 4 door electric Jeep Wrangler. However, there was this neat two seat sports car that is kind of a pseudo Viper. Bob Nardelli, Chrysler’s CEO sure didn’t bring his tools from Home Depot for this one! However, his vision is a full lineup of electric vehicles with a timetable parallel with the Chevy Volt. How ironic is it that just 4 weeks later we learn that GM might not make it to another Christmas and both GM and Chrysler may need each other to survive long enough to produce these cars. As an American, I hope that these pillars of American industry will survive long enough to hit one out of the park with the next generation of automobiles.
