Will GM still be here to put this thing on the road? A month ago, the Volt was unveiled in Detroit and it’s a pretty nice looking sedan. The hopes of GM and perhaps the American auto sector seemed to be rising that the Volt and its future non-gas engine counterparts would be the new killer app that would turn the industry around much like the IPOD did for Apple. But will GM make it in time or will this American cornerstone run out of cash? Merger talks with Chrysler are heating up. If the two wounded warriors join forces, will it be enough for the merged company to survive and how many jobs will be lost as a result of consolidation? If they don’t merge, will they both fall? What happens to R&D budgets? Will the government fund the “Manhattan” like project that will surely be needed to keep us from having to go to gas stations. The Chevy Volt is more than a new car introduction. Its successful launch is a vital first step to the new American highway.
