Gas by Class - Chevrolet HHR

This is another in our series on function and fuel efficiency without the hybrid upcharge. The Chevrolet HHR, at 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, is another alternative to consider. It’s on the small side but the retro panel-truck design creates options for cargo and kids. It features a 2.2 liter 149 horsepower engine for an MSRP price of $17,370. It can also be upgraded to the SS model with a turbo that boosts the horsepower to 260 with 21/29 mpg. Now, that’s pretty cool for a sleeker retro styled vehicle than the PT Cruiser. I saw the HHR at a car show a couple of years ago and I wanted one just on the styling. I’m not sure that 21 mpg in the city is enough to compete with the new breed of vehicles we are expecting, but for the next several years, at an $18,000 price tag, you will more than save in initial costs what you might spend in gas on a higher priced car that gets 25-30 mpg in the city. And every dollar less that oil trades at makes the Chevrolet HHR an even better choice! Source: Evan Griffy, “Gas by Class”; MSN Autos
