The Toyota Scion xD will give you 27 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway and the 1.8 liter 128 hp engine will provide good power for a signature “rolling box” that features Toyota reliability. You know how weird looking things are considered “Cool” on campus (I remember my old Morris Minor! – sold it at our White Elephant sale for $25). The Toyota Scion will be a hit with your college bound son or daughter or sure will save commuter dollars for you or your spouse without the hybrid markup for about $15-16,000. The Nissan Versa, at 26/31, is a nice looking small car with MSRP at $12,880 and a 1.8-liter 122 hp engine. This is a great idea because it is cheap with good power and good looks.
