Cadillac Escalade

Cadillac Escalade – 12 mpg in the city, 17 mpg on the road. That’s what the fine print said when I read the half page ad in the Saturday newspaper. Of course, the Escalade hasn’t exactly been a middle class favorite being priced right up there with about 10 years worth of IRA contributions. But it got me to wondering just how far we have come since the gas lines of the mid 70’s. The family 8 cylinder Chevrolet, Buick or Ford did about 14-16 city, 17-18 road. We downsized from 6-8 cylinder engines to 4-6 cylinders, added horsepower, decreased emissions and shrunk interiors. There are more people riding comfortably in smaller cars than during those days of shortages and stagflation. But in looking at the Caddy ad, I realized that we really haven’t come very far in 30+ years. Foreign oil still strangles us politically and economically.
