08 Detroit Auto Show Attendance Drops, Despite Unveiling Of Some Cool Concepts

Attendance at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show fell slightly by .3% from the previous year despite the highly anticipated debuts of some pretty cool concept cars. Some of the concepts introduced at the show are extremely futuristic and lend a sense of fun and adventure to this year’s list of entrants, while other’s no doubt are within the consumer’s grasp as production rollout is expected with the next couple of years.
Some of my favorites from this year’s lineup which are unlikely to make it to production are Mazda Furai (who’s 450 horse-power would truly add relevance to the makes Zoom-Zoom call to action), and the Hummer HX (who’s renegade back to the future looks will appeal to some more than to others).
Of this year’s concept cars which are a good bet to see production, my favorite is the Fisker Karma which upon sight immediately dismisses any preconceived notion of what design limitations might be inherent when developing a concept for a premium plug-in hybrid. Imagine a plug-in which give you a 50 mile driving range between charges and can achieve a maximum speed of 125 miles per hour. Now that’s what I call impressive.
